The
Barbara K. Lipman Early Childhood School and Research Institute
at The University of Memphis has received accreditation by
the National Association for the Education of Young Children
(NAEYC). The accreditation is valid for three years.
The
Lipman School was cited for its strong staff-child interaction,
classroom environment and developmentally appropriate curriculum.
"Now, more than ever, Memphis needs a flagship early
childhood program assisting others in the area in providing
high-quality early education programs," said Sandra Turner,
the school's director. "The Lipman School is that flagship."
Lipman,
a laboratory/demonstration school associated with The U of
M's College of Education, has an enrollment of 83 students
ages 2-8. Its programs include Montessori and Reggio Emilia
classes.
About
seven percent of early childhood programs nationwide, representing
some 8,071 programs serving 712,276 children, have achieved
this prestigious accreditation. NAEYC accreditation is a rigorous,
voluntary process by which early childhood programs demonstrate
that they meet national standards of excellence. Childcare
centers, preschools, kindergartens, and before- and after-school
programs are eligible to seek NAEYC accreditation.
Programs
pursuing accreditation undergo an intensive self-study, collecting
information from parents, teachers, administrators and classroom
observations. They also receive an on-site visit by early
childhood experts, specially trained by NAEYC, to validate
the self-study results.
