Students at Memphis University School will present a donation
to the Hooks Institute for Social Change at The University
of Memphis. Dr. Benjamin L. Hooks will accept the gift during
an assembly at MUS on Friday, Feb. 23, at 9:30 a.m.
Members
of the student civic service organization raised the money
through car washes, Christmas tree sales, a talent show and
other projects.
The
Hooks Institute pursues an agenda of research and outreach
to build on Hooks' lifetime of work to achieve a just society.
Among the Institute's programs are building an archival collection
of materials from the civil rights campaign; bringing school
children to the U of M campus for a day-long program about
the civil rights movement; collecting and recording the memoirs
of civil rights leaders; and holding an annual symposium and
lecture series that explores the public policy dimensions
of such issues as community leadership, economic development
race relations.
