The
Institute of Egyptian Art & Archaeology (IEAA) of The
University of Memphis is hosting a slide lecture by Dr. Francesco
Tiradritti on Friday, February 21, at 7 p.m. in the Fogelman
Executive Center on The University of Memphis campus. The
title of the lecture is "Excavating the Tomb of Harwa,
A Priest of Amun in Thebes under the Nubian Pharaohs."
Dr.
Tiradritti, Director of the Archaeological Mission of the
Milan Museum in Egypt, has been in charge of the excavation
of the Tomb of Harwa in Luxor, Egypt, since 1996. Harwa was
a priest of Amun and virtual ruler of Upper Egypt during the
time of the 25th Dynasty (ca. 650 BCE) Nubian rulers. His
tomb is one of the largest private monuments in all of Thebes
and is located in front of the famous mortuary temple of Queen
Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahri. For the past seven years, Dr.
Tiradritti and his team have uncovered exquisite relief carvings
and ancient funerary texts that shed new light on the themes
of life, death, and eternal rebirth.
Dr.
Tiradritti is author of the majority of entries on Egypt in
the Treccani Encyclopedia of Ancient Arts and editor of the
lavishly illustrated Treasures of the Egyptian Museum. He
received a Ph.D. from the Sorbonne University in Paris. He
is a consultant archaeologist to the Civic Archaeological
Collections of Milan and is a member of the Italian Mission
in Cairo for the construction of the new Egyptian Museum at
the Giza Plateau.
The
lecture is free and open to the public. There will be a reception
prior to the lecture beginning at 6 p.m. For more information,
contact Dr. Lorelei H. Corcoran, Director of the Institute
of Egyptian Art & Archaeology, at 678-2645 or 678-2555.
