Cuban-born
American artist Maria Elena González will show works
addressing the meaning of home in America during an exhibit
from March 8 through April 19 at the Art Museum of The University
of Memphis. The works in "UN Real Estates" consist
of apartment floor plans, like those an immigrant family might
inhabit, embossed on cast concrete forms that resemble flying
carpets.
In
conjunction with "UN Real Estates," the museum's
ArtLab will host "Entrances," a collaborative effort
between González and Colonial Junior High School, an
optional school for the arts. "Entrances" is directed
by Patricia Carreras, a specialist in aesthetic education
for the College of Education at The U of M. Colonial students
in creative writing, visual art, music, drama and dance will
take inspiration from the González works for their
exhibition.
Opening
receptions for the exhibitions will be held Friday, March
7, from 5 to 7:30 p.m.
Admission
to all museum events and exhibitions is free. Museum hours
are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
