Ira Harkavy and Barbara Holland, national leaders in service learning and engaged scholarship, will address these issues with University of Memphis faculty on Tuesday, March 15 from 10 a.m. to noon in Room 123 of the Fogelman Executive Center. Ira Harkavy, a long-time leader in the field of service-learning, is the Associate Vice President and Director of the Center for Community Partnerships at the University of Pennsylvania, a role he has held since the center was founded. Dr. Harkavy calls himself a "historian by training" but brings a wide variety of perspectives to his teaching, his scholarship, and his service. In his own words, his current work "seeks to combine academically-based community service, collaborative, democratic learning and real-world problem solving on campus and in the community. Judith Rodin, President of the University of Pennsylvania says, "Ira's voice has been the most original and the most passionate in calling faculty from Penn and across the country, to engage their research and teaching in service to their local communities." Barbara Holland, Ph.D., is Director of the National Service-Learning Clearinghouse. In this role, she provides leadership to ensure that the Clearinghouse is the most comprehensive resource available on service-learning and civic engagement. She joined the Clearinghouse in April 2002 after an appointment as the visiting director of the Office of University Partnerships at the Department of Housing and Urban Development in Washington, D.C. She also continues to serve as a senior scholar with Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis in their Center for Service and Learning, as Adjunct Professor of the University of Western Sydney, and as executive editor of Metropolitan Universities journal. Her publications and presentations reflect her expertise in service-learning research, assessment, community-partnership building, and institutional change.
