Dr. Shirley C. Raines, academic vice chancellor for the University
of Kentucky in Lexington and dean of the College of Education
there, was named today by the Tennessee Board of Regents as
the new president of The University of Memphis.
The
announcement was carried live via a conference-call telephone
hookup from the Board's office in Nashville to the campus
of The U of M, where faculty, staff and students gathered
in the Fogelman Executive Center to get the news.
Raines'
appointment caps a search process that began last February,
when Dr. V. Lane Rawlins announced he was leaving The U of
M to accept the presidency of Washington State University
in Pullman, Wash. Rawlins left Memphis in May; he was succeeded
on an interim basis by Dr. Ralph J. Faudree, who had been
the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences.
