Full Slate of Events Marks Black History Month at U of M

The University of Memphis will celebrate Black History Month with a full schedule of lectures, musical events, pageantry and programs.

The month-long celebration will begin Saturday, Feb.1, with an opening ceremony and reception at 7 p.m. in the Michael D. Rose Theatre. Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton, a U of M alumnus, will be honored with the Authur Holmon Lifetime Achievement Award at the ceremony.

Other events and times include:

  • Tues., Feb. 4 - Honey and Pearls, 12 p.m., University Center Mark Twain Lounge
  • Thurs., Feb. 6 - Art Showcase, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., University Center Mark Twain Lounge
  • Fri., Feb. 7 - Unity Mixer, 12:30 p.m., Michael D. Rose Theatre
  • Sun., Feb. 9 - Gospel Explosion with Trin-i-tee 5:7, 5 p.m., Michael D. Rose Theatre
  • Tues., Feb. 11 - Heritage lecture & tour, 11:30 a.m., University Center Faulkner Lounge
  • Wed., Feb. 12 - Judge Greg Mathis, star of the WB Network's Judge Mathis Show.
    A former street youth and high school dropout, Mathis was ordered by a judge to obtain his GED, and he went on to become a committed civil rights activist, public servant and the youngest elected judge in the state of Michigan.
  • Thurs., Feb. 13 - Alpha Phi Alpha Black & Gold Pageant, 7 p.m., Rose Theatre
  • Sat., Feb. 15 - NAACP Freedom Ball, 8 p.m., U of M Holiday Inn
  • Thurs., Feb. 20 - talk by Nikki Giovanni, 7 p.m., University Center Ballroom
    Giovanni, poet, writer, activist and educator, is the author of more than two dozen books, including volumes of poetry, illustrated children's books, and collections of essays. She is committed to the fight for civil rights and equality, and her works focus on the individual, specifically the power one has to make a difference in oneself and in the lives of others. Since 1987 Giovanni has taught writing and literature at Virginia Tech University.
