Slate of Events Marks Black History Month at U of M

The
University of Memphis will celebrate Black History Month with
a full schedule of lectures, musical events, pageantry and
programs.
The
month-long celebration will begin Saturday, Feb.1, with an
opening ceremony and reception at 7 p.m. in the Michael D.
Rose Theatre. Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton, a U of M alumnus,
will be honored with the Authur Holmon Lifetime Achievement
Award at the ceremony.

A
former street youth and high school dropout, Mathis was
ordered by a judge to obtain his GED, and he went on to
become a committed civil rights activist, public servant
and the youngest elected judge in the state of Michigan.

Giovanni,
poet, writer, activist and educator, is the author of more
than two dozen books, including volumes of poetry, illustrated
children's books, and collections of essays. She is committed
to the fight for civil rights and equality, and her works
focus on the individual, specifically the power one has
to make a difference in oneself and in the lives of others.
Since 1987 Giovanni has taught writing and literature at
Virginia Tech University.
