2 Starts Full Slate of Black History Month Events at the U
of M

The
University of Memphis will celebrate Black History Month with
a full schedule of pageantry and programs, musical events,
and lectures.
The
opening ceremony will be Monday, Feb. 2, at 7 p.m. in the
University Center Ballroom. At that event, the Authur S. Holmon
Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to former Memphis
City Schools Superintendent Johnnie B. Watson. The award is
given to a Memphian who has devoted a lifetime of service
to the community.
Some
other events, which are free and open to the public, include:

Feb. 4
- Economic Empowerment/Black Dollar Day Workshop by Hubert
Glover of Atlanta, 12:30 p.m., University Center Faulkner
Lounge
- Thursday,
Feb. 5
- Lecture and book-signing by Dr. Bertice Berry, author,
educator and social activist, 12:30 p.m., University Center
Ballroom
- Tuesday,
Feb. 10
- Performance of Black Men Dying, Black Men Rising by James
Chapmyn, 7 p.m., University Center Ballroom
- Wednesday,
Feb. 18
- Lecture by Julian Bond, chairman of the board of directors
of the NAACP, 7 p.m., University Center Ballroom
- Sunday,
Feb. 22
- Gospel Explosion hosted by Christie Taylor of 95.7 FM,
5 p.m., Michael D. Rose Theater.
