Harry Belafonte Talk Will Highlight Black History Month at U of M

A dialogue with entertainer and activist Harry Belafonte will highlight Black History Month activities at the University of Memphis. The calendar will include a full schedule of pageantry and programs, musical events, and lectures. Belafonte's talk will be Thursday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. in the Michael D. Rose Theatre. Born in Harlem, the calypso musician and actor used his fame as an entertainer in the cause of human rights. He is probably best known for singing the "Banana Boat Song" with its signature lyric "Day-O." Belafonte was the first African-American to win an Emmy Award, for his first solo television special. He also received a Tony Award and a Grammy Award in 1985 for lifetime achievement. Some other Black History Month events include: Tuesday, Feb. 1 – Opening ceremony with presentation of the Authur S.
