Attention all inventors and innovators!  Do you have a great idea for a new product or service?  The FedEx Institute of Technology at the University of Memphis is holding a Business Plan Competition to encourage students and researchers to produce top-quality businesses.

Anyone with a business strategy for a marketable product or service is encouraged to enter. There are no geographic restrictions on teams for the competition. Teams must contain at least one full-time or part-time student, either in college or high school. Many entries are expected to include breakthrough technologies, but any innovative entry is welcome.

The competition is enhanced by workshops on various aspects of starting and managing a business and business plan topics. The first workshop is designed to help potential contestants prepare for the competition. It will be held Jan. 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the FedEx Institute, Room 203. Other workshop dates and topics include: Feb. 15, business plan foundations; March 15, marketing and markets; and April 5, legal issues/finances/intellectual property.

Business Plan winners will be announced May 12.

Entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, professors, and other professionals will judge contestants on their business plans and summaries based on the ideas’ market potential and the teams’ ability to execute their business plan successfully.

Executive summary winners in three categories will each receive $1,000.  Business plan winners will receive $25,000 for the grand prize, $10,000 for first runner-up, and $5,000 for second runner-up.
