The University of Memphis will have a “French connection” in the summer of 2007, as it hosts its first annual Loire Valley Fiction Conference in the beautiful river valley that is home to rolling hills, vineyards, historic sites, and more than 1,000 chateaux.
The conference, which will take place June 15-24, just outside Angers, about 180 miles southwest of Paris, will feature as writers-in-residence noted authors Richard Bausch, Charles Baxter, Ann Beattie, Bobbie Ann Mason, and Robert Stone.
The workshop has openings for 16-20 participants, who will have one-to-one conferences with the authors. There will also be day-long guided sightseeing excursions from the conference site.
The cost of the workshop is $4,500, which includes lodging, meals, and day-trip transportation within France. Travel arrangements from the United States to France, and from the Paris airport to Angers, are the responsibility of each selected participant. Because of space limitations at the chateau where the workshop will take place, each participant will share lodging with a roommate. If additional lodging is needed, a bed-and-breakfast is nearby.
The workshop is open to anyone meeting the admissions criteria. It is a not-for-credit course, and undergraduate students are eligible to apply. Persons seeking admission to the workshop should submit up to 20 pages of their fiction writing and two letters of recommendation no later than April 1, 2007, to Jan Coleman, MFA Program, Patterson Hall, Room 471, The University of Memphis, Memphis, Tenn., 38152.More information is available online or via email or phone.
