Jackson resident Sue Ellen Barnes has received the Outstanding Student award from the American Society of Civil Engineers at the University of Memphis. The junior civil engineering major was recognized for helping to organize the chapter's Deep South Conference, which was hosted by the U of M this spring. During the conference students from the region participated in a steel-bridge-building contest and concrete-canoe races.

Barnes is vice president of the ASCE student chapter. She received the Computer Science, Engineering, and Mathematics Scholarship and the Richard E. Whitmore Scholarship. Her career goal is to develop residential areas that are environmentally safe, aesthetically unique, and pedestrian friendly.

She is the daughter of Herman Barnes of Auburn, Ala., and Patti Barnes of Jackson. She graduated from Jackson Central Merry High School in 2003 and attended Middle Tennessee State University for a year before deciding to major in civil engineering.
