The University of Memphis has hired Dr. Vicki Sallis Murrell as director of Professional and Continuing Education.
Murrell returns to the U of M, where she had earlier worked as an innovative technology specialist in the Information Technology Division. She also spent seven years with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. There she was director of Instructional Technology, working first with the College of Nursing to move its graduate degree programs online, and then with the College of Medicine to integrate technology into teaching and testing.
Murrell received her Ph.D. degree in educational psychology and research and her M.Ed. degree from the University of Memphis. She earned a B.A. degree in history from Millsaps College.
Murrell and her staff are focusing on providing courses that enhance and sustain professional development in the business sector and that will build a solid foundation for the Continuing Education program. "Non-credit education provides any community with a rich resource," said Murrell. "At the University of Memphis, we have a wonderful opportunity to bring to Memphis and the surrounding area quality programs facilitated by some of the best instructors around.
"Our goal is to complement, not to compete with, recreational offerings of community centers, religious organizations, and other groups. The U of M's Professional and Continuing Education focuses on courses and programs that enable adult learners to enrich their lives, whether professionally or personally."
Courses this fall will range from "American Sign Language" to "Writing Your Will," as well as a diverse range of online offerings. The fall catalog will be published in the Memphis Business Journal on Aug. 25 and The Commercial Appeal on Aug. 27. The catalog also will be available online at http://umce.memphis.edu.
