The University of Memphis Child Development Center has received accreditation from the National Accreditation Commission. "This is about the highest we can go," Director Margaret Scott said of the accreditation. The center has maintained a perfect three-star rating since 2002.
Established in 1993, the center provides care for children of U of M students. The children range in age from 30 months to 12 years.
In 2001 the center received a grant from the U.S. Department of Education to establish a creative arts/after-school program. Through that program, children have a chance to learn violin, art, drama, dance, sewing, and cooking. The grant also allows the center to offer discounts to parents who receive Pell Grants and who volunteer their time at the center and attend parenting workshops.
Scott recently was appointed to serve on the Tennessee Department of Human Services' Child Care Center Standards Committee. The committee provides DHS with advice on child care licensing regulations and child care in general.
The child care center is operated by the office of Residence Life at the University.
