The Museum of Television & Radio has added Hoxie: The First Stand to its permanent collection. The documentary film by University of Memphis communication professor David Appleby has won a string of honors, including a Peabody Award, a Mid-South Regional Emmy, and a CINE Golden Eagle.

The New York City museum has more than 100,000 television and radio programs available for access by the public. The museum also hosts viewing and listening series, exhibitions, and seminars.

Hoxie examines the aftermath of a 1955 decision by the school board of a small Arkansas town to integrate its schools voluntarily, setting off a confrontation with a growing movement to resist the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education decision. Despite threats from outside agitators and local opposition, Hoxie school board members refused to rescind their decision. Instead, they sought the help of a lawyer whose strategy ultimately drew a reluctant federal Justice Department into the battle and led to the nullification of state segregation laws.

“I’m thrilled to have Hoxie included in the museum's collection,” Appleby said. “When I attended a reception there for the Peabody Award winners last month, I was humbled, to say the least, by the people and films represented by their exhibits and holdings. To be in that company is quite an honor, both for me and the University.”
