For the second year, The University of Memphis will present Distinguished Advising Awards to faculty and staff members during the University's annual Faculty Convocation. Sherry L. Bryan will be recognized as this year's outstanding faculty adviser and Dr. Bonita S. Lyons as the outstanding professional staff adviser. Each will receive a $2,000 award at the March 28 recognition ceremony.

Bryan is an associate professor in the University's architecture program, which is part of the College of Communication and Fine Arts.

Lyons is manager of the Office of Academic Status and Retention Services.

Dr. Tom Nenon, assistant vice provost for academic affairs, said good advising is an essential part of the educational mission at the University. "Good advising goes beyond just helping students select the right classes," Nenon said. "It involves helping them find their way through the University, helping them find a direction that will be right for them in life, and helping them find themselves."
