The
FedEx Technology Institute and the division of Information
Systems at The University of Memphis will sponsor a one-day
technology exhibition from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, April
2, that will highlight new and emerging educational technologies.
"Emerging
Technologies for Higher Education" (ETHED) will give
providers of educational technologies - including industry
and academic researchers - an opportunity to showcase the
newest advances in technology that are changing the nature
of education.
A
regional Internet2 event entitled "The Internet2 Community:
Research and Education in Tennessee," also sponsored
by The
University of Memphis, will take place on the same day. It
will provide attendees with a peek into the future of the
next generation Internet.
The
two events will include remarks from Dr. Shirley Raines, president
of The University of Memphis, and Jim Phillips, executive
director of the FedEx Technology Institute.
The
events, which are free and open to the public, will be held
at the University of Memphis Holiday Inn on Central Avenue
across from the U of M campus.
James
Penrod, vice president and CIO at The University of Memphis,
said, "The University of Memphis has invested significantly
in educational technologies over the past few years. This
event will offer the community at large an opportunity to
share in the learning experience from which our campus has
benefited through these investments and through the innovation
of our faculty. It will also provide a glimpse of what the
FedEx Technology Institute will bring to this region when
it becomes operational next fall."
More
than 40 presenters are expected in such areas as distance
learning, Internet Protocol (IP)-based video-conferencing,
web-based course management tools, artificial intelligence,
smart-board classroom equipment, and wireless/portable devices.
The event will make use of a partnership format, that is,
an educator and a technology provider will be available in
each booth to demonstrate educational applications and to
discuss the technology. This will give attendees a unique
opportunity to ask questions of the University clients and
manufacturers of the technology.
