Lonnie Latham has been appointed associate dean of students for minority affairs at The University of Memphis. Latham, who joined The U of M in 1985, had served as interim associate dean since August 2002. He was also assistant director of the University Center.

Latham began his career in higher education at Shelby State Community College, where he was an academic counselor, job placement coordinator, and student activities coordinator. At the U of M, Latham served students by assisting in their programming needs. He has been an adviser for several minority organizations and has been a consultant to University administrators on a variety of minority issues.

"Mr. Latham has a record of strong relationships with African-American students and with other minority students, making sure they have the programs, services, and tools they need for success at the University," said Dr. William Porter, assistant vice president for student affairs and dean of students. "We're pleased that he will be able to use this experience and these skills and relationships in his new position."

Among his honors, Latham has received The U of M's Division of Student Affairs Pyramid Award and the Black Student Association Exemplary Service Award.

A graduate of Tennessee State University, Latham earned a master's degree from The U of M.
