Local
teachers can learn more about aviation science this summer
at the annual Basic and Advanced Aerospace Workshops conducted
at the University of Memphis.
Set
for June 4-24, the workshops cover aviation and space technology.
They are open to K-12 teachers and administrators in public
and private schools across West Tennessee who are currently
teaching and will be working next year.
The
workshops will be conducted by the U of M's Department of
Instruction and Curriculum Leadership. Teachers enroll in
the workshops receive full in-state tuition plus a stipend.
They will also earn three hours of undergraduate or graduate
credit and two hours of flight instruction at a local airport.
Participants
pay the University's activity fee, but the in-state tuition
is covered by grants from the Aeronautics Division of the
Tennessee Department of Transportation, which underwrites
the program.
Participants
in the annual workshops will take field trips to aviation
sites and facilities, as well as attend daily classes at the
University. "We hope teachers will incorporate some of
the information into their classes the next year," said
Dr. J.F. Crabtree, professor of instruction and curriculum
leadership.
Crabtree,
director of the program since 1981, said its goal is to help
teachers develop an understanding of aerospace concepts and
skills, let them explore the role of aerospace technology
in Tennessee, and provide them with resources for classroom
instruction and aerospace careers.
Crabtree
encouraged interested educators to apply as soon as possible.
For an application, call Crabtree at 901-678-3435. He will
notify teachers by April 1 if they have been selected for
the workshops.
