The
Institute of Egyptian Art and Archaeology at the University
of Memphis will present an illustrated lecture on ancient
Egyptian mortuary rituals at 7 p.m. April 8 in the Fogelman
Executive Center, Room 123. The free public lecture is entitled
"Continuity and Cultic Rites: the Egyptian Community
and the 'City of the Dead.'"
Dr.
Lorelei H. Corcoran, director of the Institute, will explore
cultural continuity in ancient Egypt with a focus on mortuary
rituals from the days of the pharaohs to the Roman period.
The necropoli (cities of the dead) of ancient Egypt, accessible
to the living, served as a visible reminder of the presence
of the spirits of the deceased and perhaps presented a model
for the sense of community in modern Egypt that values a responsible
social bond between generations.
This
lecture is the inaugural lecture in a new series called "The
Legacy of Egypt."
A
public reception in the Fogelman Executive Center will precede
the lecture at 6:30 p.m.
