New
Teacher Center Will Hold Symposium March 26 & 27

The
New Teacher Center at the University of Memphis will hold
its first induction symposium March 26-27. Sessions will be
held at the Holiday Inn at the University of Memphis and at
the U of M's Fogelman Executive Center.
The
symposium is an opportunity for educators, researchers and
policymakers to focus on the needs of new teachers. Its theme
is "Improving Teacher Quality and Student Achievement
Through Effective Induction and Mentoring Programs for New
Teachers."
Six
concurrent sessions and three general sessions will highlight
the work of the U of M's New Teacher Center and the leadership
that has been provided by the New Teacher Center at the University
of California, Santa Cruz. Keynote speakers at the Friday
evening session will be Dan Ward, deputy superintendent of
the Memphis City Schools, and city school board member Sara
Lewis.
The
goal of the New Teacher Center is to provide professional
development and mentoring that will increase new-teacher retention
rates and improve student achievement in the Memphis City
Schools.
