Herff College of Engineering Will Present Honors March 17

The University of Memphis’ Herff College of Engineering will hold its annual Awards Dinner on Thursday, March 17, to honor outstanding alumni and distinguished service in engineering. The event will be at the Holiday Inn at 3700 Central Avenue, beginning with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by the dinner and program. Stephen P. Liberto, vice president of global trade services U.S./International for FedEx Express, will be recognized as the 2005 Outstanding Alumnus. A 1981 graduate, he has global responsibility for customs brokerage and clearance, regulatory changes and trade affairs, and regulatory compliance across 64 clearance ports and 215 countries. Before assuming global trade responsibilities, Liberto lived in Brussels, Belgium, where he was vice president of planning, engineering, and operations support for the FedEx Europe, Middle East & Africa division. He also has served as managing director of global service engineering and of national hub operations planning and administration in Indianapolis. Prior to that, Liberto held senior manager and manager positions in engineering planning support to various airport and ramp operations. Liberto was an executive council and board member of the International Air Cargo Association from 2002-04. He also served on the board of directors of the Herff College of Engineering alumni chapter. The 2005 Herff Honor Awards for Distinguished Service in Engineering will be presented to George D. Barnes, Lee R. Nyman, James M. Phillips, and Jeffrey E. Schryver. Barnes is retired president of Buchart-Horn Inc. and chair of the Herff College of Engineering advisory council. Nyman Is vice president of manufacturing and engineering for Mueller Industries Inc. Phillips is chair and CEO of Luminetx Corp and former executive director of the FedEx Institute of Technology.
