Johnson Named New Advancement VP at U of M

Julie Johnson, CFRE, has been named vice president for Advancement at the University of Memphis. She has been serving as interim vice president of the Advancement Division since last July. As vice president, she will direct the fund-raising, alumni relations, marketing, and communications functions of the University and oversee a division made up of almost 50 employees. Johnson came to the U of M in April 2004 as Associate Vice President for Development within the Advancement Division. Immediately before joining the University of Memphis administration, she had served as Director of Institutional Advancement for Albertson College of Idaho in Caldwell, Idaho. Johnson's career in college advancement also includes stints at Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia, where she was Director of Development Operations from 1996 to 1999 and Director of Development Services and Special Projects from 1991 to 1995. She also served for a year as Director of Development for Planned Parenthood of the Blue Ridge in Roanoke. Johnson began her career in higher education with a dual appointment as Assistant Director of the Honors Program and Assistant Director of the Governor's School of South Carolina at the College of Charleston, positions she held from 1984 to 1991. She holds a B.A. degree in political science from the College of Charleston and an M.A. degree in liberal studies, humanities from Hollins University in Virginia. Johnson has done additional graduate work in public administration and health administration at the College of Charleston and at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. She has also participated in professional development initiatives offered by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), the National Society of Fund-Raising Executives (NSFRE), and Harvard University 's Institute on Educational Management. She holds the professional designation of Certified Fund Raising Executive, conferred by the international organization of the same name. The organization certifies fundraising professionals who demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and commitment to the highest standards of ethical and professional practice in serving the philanthropic sector.
