Title VII's Sweeping Changes Will be Focus of Symposium April 1 at the U of M

The University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law and the Labor and Employment Law Section of the Memphis Bar Association will observe the 40 th anniversary of Title VII: The Civil Rights Act with a symposium Friday, April 1, from 8:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. at the U of M’s Fogelman Executive Center.

Title VII, which prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin, has had a profound impact on American society since its enactment in 1965. Four panel discussions will examine that impact; topics include “Legislative Struggle: Early Years, and Leading Supreme Court Cases;” “Ethics in Employment Law Context;” “1971 to 1991 Amendments, Supreme Court Cases, Race Discrimination, and Beyond;” and “1991 Amendments to Present, and Leading Supreme Court Cases.”

The symposium’s opening address will be given by Eric Drieband, General Counsel for the U.S. Equal Opportunity Commission. Panelists include EEOC Commissioner Stuart Ishimaru and leading practitioners from around the country.

The Hon. Julia S. Gibbons, Circuit Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, will be the speaker for the luncheon.
