Dr. Karen Weddle-West Will Receive MLK Award April 4

The University of Memphis will present Dr. Karen Weddle-West with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Human Rights Award at a 1:30 p.m. ceremony Monday, April 4, in the University Center Faulkner Lounge. The award recognizes an individual whose activities exemplify non-violent leadership in the pursuit of social justice and human rights. Weddle-West is the University's assistant vice provost for graduate studies.

A lifelong learner in the areas of educational psychology and child and family studies, she has infused scholarship on diversity into her teaching, research, service, and professional development. Weddle-West has conducted more than 100 workshops and presentations nationally and regionally on understanding and valuing diversity, strategies for enhancing diversity, and culturally responsive teaching in schools.

She has developed and taught courses on women and minorities at the University of Tennessee, Tennessee State University, Ohio State University, as well as the U of M. Currently she teaches a graduate course on diversity in the U of M's College of Education.

Weddle-West served as associate professor of educational psychology in the Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology, and Research and as recruitment coordinator for the College of Education from 1989-1998. She earned her master's degree and doctorate from the University of Tennessee.

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship also will be presented at the ceremony. This year's recipient is Oyemolade "Molade" Osibodu, a junior electrical engineering major.
