Senator
Alexander Will Speak May 29 on History Education Act
Please
join President Shirley Raines in welcoming Senator Lamar Alexander
to our campus on Thursday, May 29th at 2:00 p.m. in the Faulkner
Lounge of the University Center. Senator Alexander will be
speaking on the "American History and Civics Education
Act". This bill will create summer residential academies
for teachers and students based on the successful Governor's
School program in Tennessee that he implemented as governor.
Congressman Roger Wicker of Mississippi also will be present
in support of the American History and Civics Education bill.
The
"American History and Civics Education Act" was
unanimously approved by the Health, Education, Labor, and
Pensions Committee and now heads to the Senate floor. It is
co-sponsored by 20 other senators including Senators Bill
Frist (R-TN), Judd Gregg (R-NH), Harry Reid (D-NV) and Edward
Kennedy (D-MA).
