Noted
information scientist Dr. Johannes Britz will discuss South
Africa's role in the globalization of Africa during a talk
May 20 at the University of Memphis' McWherter Library, Room
226. "Globalization and Africa: Light at the End of the
Tunnel or an Oncoming Train?," is free and open to the
public.
Britz
is a professor of information science at the University of
Pretoria, South Africa, and a visiting professor at the University
of Wisconsin at Milwaukee.
His
presentation will have three parts. He will give a historical
overview of the position of the white South African in Africa
and the changes that occurred in 1994, when the country's
first non-racial, democratically-elected parliament took office.
Britz will next discuss the process of globalization and the
idea of Africa as a "lost continent." Finally, he
will argue that South Africa is the economic, political and
technological leader in Africa; and he will explain why South
African can succeed in putting Africa back on the world map,
but also why it could fail to lead Africa into the era of
globalization.
The
event is sponsored by the Friends of the University of Memphis
Libraries. For more information, call Tom Mendina at 678-4310.
