A
gift from University of Memphis alumnus Philip Donovan has
enabled the College of Arts and Sciences to establish a Travel
Enrichment Fund.
The
fund will assist students by providing supplementary money
to help pay for study abroad programs, attendance at scholarly
conferences, and undergraduate research initiatives. In addition,
the fund will assist faculty members with scholarly travel
and ongoing research projects.
The
mission of the College is to provide quality education by
training students to think critically about their course of
study, themselves, and the world around them. To fulfill that
mission, students need to experience cultures outside of the
Mid-South.
Some
80 percent of incoming freshmen from Shelby County and about
the same percentage remain in Shelby County after graduation.
The College is dedicated to providing opportunities for its
students and faculty to experience life outside of the Memphis
area.
Donovan,
a vice president with FTN Financial Capital Markets, earned
his bachelor's and master's degrees in business administration
from the U of M. He has traveled extensively, including visits
to Australia, China, India, Kenya, Egypt, Turkey, Ireland
and Austria.
