The Tennessee Department of Health has named the University of Memphis Gambling Clinic as the state designated treatment center for gambling addiction for the west Tennessee area. Before the bill that produced the designation became a law, Tennessee was one of only three states with legal gambling that did not have a plan to deal with gambling addictions. The U of M Gambling Clinic is the largest gambling treatment facility in the region. The Clinic is open both to the public and the campus community. All assessment and treatment activities in the Clinic are constantly evaluated and modified based on evidence collected by researchers at the clinic. Treatment in the Gambling Clinic is based on motivational, cognitive-behavioral and harm reduction principles. The state designation will ensure that the Clinic has the resources to continue to provide cost effective treatment to a greater number of people. The other treatment centers are Buffalo Valley Incorporated in Hohenwald, TN, and the Helen Ross McNabb Center in Knoxville, TN.
