U of M Graduate Student Will Intern at Smithsonian Institution

Miska Shaw, a graduate student at the University of Memphis, has been selected by the Smithsonian Institution as an intern this summer. She will participate in the 10-week James W. Webb Internship Program for minority senior and graduate students in business and public administration. Shaw will serve in the Smithsonian's Office of Planning, Management, and Budget (OPMB). She will assist budget directors on a variety of projects, including an Institution-wide analysis of federal spending patterns by the Smithsonian; working with a senior OPMB analyst to develop a Congressional Action Worksheet for the 2006 federal appropriation; and preparing decision papers to document requests for additional funding, specifically that related to information technology proposed budget adjustments. Shaw is pursuing a master's degree in public administration at the U of M. She also works as a graduate assistant in the office of President Shirley Raines. She earned her bachelor's degree from Cornell University. She is the daughter of Leroy and Shira Shaw of Memphis, both of whom are alumni of the University of Memphis. The Smithsonian is America 's national educational facility with 18 museums, nine research centers, and 120 affiliates around the world. The University of Memphis, founded in 1912, is a metropolitan research university. Comprising 200 buildings on four sites covering 1,160 acres, it has a student population of approximately 20,000, with a faculty and staff numbering about 2,500. A member of the Tennessee Board of Regents System, the U of M is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
