The National Security Agency and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security have designated the University of Memphis as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education for the academic years 2006-2009.

The program is intended to reduce vulnerabilities in the national information infrastructure by promoting higher education in information assurance and by producing professionals with information assurance expertise in various disciplines.

The designations and re-designations for 2006 result in a total of 75 Centers across 32 states and the District of Columbia. Designation as a Center is effective for three academic years.

The director of the U of M's Center for Information Assurance is Dr. Dipankar Dasgupta, professor of computer science.

Presentations will be made to new and re-designated Centers June 6 during the annual conference of the Colloquium for Information Systems Security Education near Washington, D.C.
