Leaders in the field of software testing will gather in Memphis on May 6 for three days of discussion focused on the science of testing.  The event is organized by the University of Memphis’ Systems Testing Excellence Program (STEP), with the corporate sponsorship of FedEx.  All workshop sessions will be held in the FedEx Institute of Technology on the University campus.

The keynote speaker for the event will be Dr. Bill Scherlis, director of the Software Engineering Research Institute at Carnegie Mellon University.  Other speakers and panelists will participate in more than a dozen sessions dealing with diverse facets of the science of testing.

David Miller, vice president of Business Systems Testing at FedEx Services, will also present a major address on the criticality of building a rigorous scientific basis for industry best practices in systems testing.

At the University of Memphis, the Systems Testing Excellence Program (STEP) was created last summer as a collaborative effort of three technology departments in three colleges – the Management Information Systems Department in the Fogelman College of Business and Economics, the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department in the Herff College of Engineering and the Computer Science Department in the College of Arts and Sciences.  The initiative positions the U of M as a nationally and internationally recognized leader in research associated with the science of systems testing.

Jasbir Dhaliwal, chairman of the MIS Department and director of STEP, said the program makes the University the largest software testing organization in the country because of the wide array of interdisciplinary researchers involved in the program.  The U of M is also creating an undergraduate minor and a graduate certification for students who reach certain levels of proficiency in that area.  This will allow the University to create a new area of experts in a growing field.
