He produced an impressive 35 percent gain in his model stock portfolio during the competition. The winner and third-place finisher were both from the prestigious Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. About 2,000 students participated in the competition.

Banner’s picks included PharamaNet Development Group, a provider of drug development services, and WebEx, a maker of Web communications and corporate collaborate software. He also benefited by buying Carbo Ceramics, an oil services company, and Apollo Group, an education provider.

Banner is pursuing a Ph.D. degree in chemistry (with a specialty in nanotechnology) and an MBA. He may open an investment partnership in the future.

Banner lives in Cordova with his wife, Nicole. His parents are Larry and Annie Banner of Eldon, Mo.
