Funded by a special grant from the Tennessee Board of Regents, the University of Memphis will offer a summer high school Mathematics Academy July 8-21 for rising 10th- and 11th-graders.
The goal of the Academy is to help high school students envision themselves attending college and to explore the field of mathematics. The curriculum is designed to demystify algebra and enhance attitudes toward mathematical science. The program will focus on improving algebra skills to help students succeed in college.
Students, chosen from selected Memphis City Schools, will live on campus for two weeks. Housing, meals and all activities will be paid for by the grant; students who successfully complete the program will receive a small stipend.
To be selected, students must have successfully completed Algebra I. They also must have finished the 9th grade and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.80.
Space is limited in this competitive program. For more information, call Shawn Boyd at 901/678-4011 or download the application.
The application deadline is May 25.
