Congressman
Harold Ford Jr. will be the inaugural speaker for the Dr.
John P. Bakke Political Communication Lecture Series at The
University of Memphis. Rep. Ford will speak at 7:30 p.m. Monday,
Nov. 25, in Room 123 of the Fogelman Executive Center on the
U of M campus. The event is free and open to the public.
Rep.
Ford will analyze the results of the recent elections, and
he will discuss world events, political communication and
issues affecting the Mid-South.
The
lecture series honors the former chairman of The U of M's
Department of Communication. Bakke, who initiated the study
of political communication in the department, was a faculty
member for 32 years before retiring in 1999. He served as
a political analyst for WREG-TV for 14 years and has been
communication director for more than 80 political campaigns,
including those of Harold Ford Sr., Bill Morris, Don Sundquist,
Mark Luttrell and A C Wharton. Bakke also worked with Harold
Ford Jr. during his first campaign for Congress.
Ford
was elected to represent the Ninth District of Tennessee in
1996 at age 26 and has been re-elected three times. He gained
national attention as the keynote speaker at the 2000 Democratic
National Convention. Ford is an advocate for higher education,
and he authored the Make College Affordable Act to help working
families meet rising tuition costs and create a tax deduction
for higher education.
A
reception will follow the lecture. For more information, call
