Jazz lovers will be uniting this month as WUMR holds a radiothon beginning Nov. 27 and running through Dec. 4. Gifts will be used to support the station's operational budget, which continues to face major reductions in state funding. Money raised from previous radiothons has been used to purchase new equipment and for overall operation of FM station "U-92," as well as to hire the station's first full-time program director.

Donors will receive gifts such as classic jazz sets and CDs. Scheduled to appear as on-air guests are U of M President Shirley Raines, Athletic Director R.C. Johnson, singer Joyce Cobb, Judge Joe Brown, and television personalities Joe Birch, Jim Jaggers, and Ron Childers.

WUMR is the only jazz station in Memphis. Known as "the Jazz Lover," the 25,000-watt station serves listeners within a 60-mile radius of Memphis. Its playlist blends contemporary and traditional jazz with a touch of fusion, Latin, and New Age music. WUMR is staffed almost exclusively by students and volunteers.

As the "radio voice of the University of Memphis," the station serves the area with educational, sports, and community service programming. It also functions as a learning laboratory for students, providing them experience in announcing, news reporting and writing, talk-show hosting, and sportscasting. In addition to on-air positions, students serve in management roles in various departments, such as music, production, traffic, news, and sports.
