For release: October 13, 2000
For more information, contact Gabrielle Maxey

Renowned China historian Jonathan Spence will discuss the relationship between China and the rest of the contemporary world on Friday, Oct. 20, at 8 p.m. at Fogelman Executive Center. The talk is free and open to the public.

The lecture will explore the different ways in which China's history and experiences affect the country today. Spence, a professor of history at Yale University, is the author of more than a dozen books on Chinese history and culture. Some, such as The Death of Woman Wang, are popular sellers outside scholarly markets. His most recent publication is a biography of Mao Zedong.

The University of Memphis Faculty Senate is sponsoring the talk.

For more information, call The U of M's Center for Interdisciplinary Studies at 678-3516.
