Two new exhibits bring surprises to The University of Memphis
Art Museum this month.
Terry
Allen and Impostors: Michael Hernandez de Luna and Michael
Thompson will open Oct. 28. Terry Allen will run through Jan.
13, Impostors through Nov. 25.
Allen
is a nationally recognized mixed-media artist whose works
include sculpture, painting, drawing, musical and theatrical
performances, video, and installations that incorporate any
and all of these media. He is an interdisciplinary artist
working in the Southern narrative tradition. Allen’s works
have been included in the Sydney Biennale, Documenta and the
Sao Paulo Biennial.
Hernandez
de Luna and Thompson met in a printmaking class at the Art
Institute of Chicago. Since 1994 they have been sending themselves
and others dozens of unusual art-stamps through the mail.
Some of these phony stamps are irreverent, some humorous and
some risqué, but all have managed to receive the ultimate
stamp of approval - they were canceled by the U.S. Postal
Service and reached their destinations.
Opening
receptions for both exhibits will be Friday, Oct. 27, from
5 to 7:30 p.m. in the museum, located in the Communication
and Fine Arts Building.
Hernandez
de Luna and Thompson will give a gallery talk Tuesday, Nov.
7, at 7 p.m.
All
museum events are free and open to the public. For more information,
call 901-678-2224 or visit the museum’s Web site at www.amum.org.
