The
"Week of Peace" at The U of M's Barbara K. Lipman
Early Childhood School and Research Institute will continue
with a series of events this Thursday and Friday, culminating
in the dedication of the school's new playground.
On
Thursday, Oct. 25, at 2:30 p.m. students and teachers will
gather on the playground to create a human peace symbol.
On
Friday, Oct. 26, from 9 to 11 a.m., "peace stations"
will be open on campus for students to participate in peaceful
activities, including making origami peace cranes, peace paintings,
planting bulbs, making a square for a Lipman Peace Quilt,
and creating a giant United States flag out of hand prints.
Friday
at 11:30 a.m. the new playground will be dedicated. The Parents
Association of Lipman School raised $40,000 for the renovation
and new playground equipment. Built on an airport theme, the
playground features spring-loaded airplanes, an airport with
a ticket window and a spaceship. Parents also helped with
landscaping and ground preparation.
"The
parents raised all the money for the renovation, which is
quite remarkable," says Sandra Turner, the school's director.
"We had real parent involvement. We are delighted."
The
school, which is associated with The University of Memphis,
is located at 3771 Poplar. For more information, call Turner
at 678-2120.
