The
University of Memphis will open its 2002-03 theater season
with "Sueño," José Rivera's contemporary
adaptation of the 17th century Spanish classic "Life
is a Dream" Oct. 10-12 and 15-19. All performances begin
at 8 p.m. on the main stage in the Theatre and Dance Building.
"Sueño,"
which means "dream," is a meditation on revenge
and altered realities presented as a twisted and irreverent
celebration in which class, culture, race, religion and gender
collide. Equity guest artist John Triana plays the prince
Segismundo, who embarks on a surreal journey that defies time
and space to a disjointed world where Hamlet's Denmark meets
Alice's Wonderland. Director Robert Barry Fleming uses Flamenco-inspired
dance, music, explosive combat and heightened poetry to produce
an engaging evening of theater.
Tickets
are $10 for the general public, $7 for non-U of M students
and senior citizens. U of M students are admitted free with
a valid ID.
