Enrollment
for the fall 2003 semester at the University of Memphis is
up 114 students over last year, with a total of 19,911 students.
Of that figure, 15,209 are undergraduates.
There
was an increase of eight percent in the important category
of first-time freshmen. The growth comes despite a substantial
increase in tuition this fall. "Our first-time freshmen
are up over last year, even with a 14.3 percent increase in
tuition," said David Wallace, director of admissions.
"Our returning students were also up. Our retention rate
is higher even though tuition costs more."
About
46 percent of undergraduates are between the ages of 18 and
22.
In
fall 2002, enrollment was 19,797 with 15,025 undergraduates.
