The
University of Memphis Loewenberg School of Nursing has received
initial approval from the Tennessee Board of Nursing and approval
from the Tennessee Board of Regents and the Tennessee Higher
Education Commission to begin a master's in nursing program
(MSN).
The
first master's class will be admitted for the spring 2004
semester. Concentrations will be offered in nursing administration,
nursing education, and advanced practice nursing. So far,
there have been 65 applications for the program.
The
master's program was established to address the critical shortage
of nurses in the Memphis area, explained Dr. Toni Bargagliotti,
dean of the Loewenberg School. "There is a 16 percent
registered nurse vacancy rate in Memphis, the highest in Tennessee.
We're meeting that need with educators, administrators, and
advanced practice nurses" Bargagliotti said.
For
admission, an applicant must hold a bachelor of science in
nursing degree (BSN), or be a registered nurse with a BA or
BS degree in a non-nursing major, or be a generic MSN (non-registered
nurse) with a BA or BS degree.
