Honors
Program Sponsors Undergraduate Research Symposium
The
University of Memphis 2004 "Works-in-Progress" Symposium
will be held on Friday, Nov. 5, from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at
the University Center, Rooms 310 F, G, H, and J. This is an
opportunity for undergraduates to present their current research
projects in their beginning stages. Students will give a 15-minute
presentation followed by a 5-minute question and answer period.
There are several requirements for students considering participation
in this years symposium:
-
The work presented must be a project that will be fully
developed and presentable by April 2005
- Students
must receive permission from their faculty mentor
- Students
must provide an abstract and prospectus with the WIPS application
Each
student's presentation will be evaluated by a faculty evaluator
who will provide feedback on the student's presentation if
he or she decides to attend the National Conference on Undergraduate
Research (NCUR). If accepted by the NCUR Committee, active
University Honors Program students will be reimbursed for
their trip to the conference. Students who are not members
of the Honors Program will receive substantial funding to
offset travel expenses.
Neither
the Works-In-Progress Symposium (WIPS) nor NCUR are competitions.
During the WIPS, students are evaluated on their individual
performance. However, NCUR is not evaluated; it is a time
for students from around the country and from all disciplines
of study to come together and share their research.
Applications
for WIPS can be picked up from the University Honors Program
office, Scates Hall Room 204. Applications are due by 4:30
p.m. Oct. 22 in Scates Hall, Room 204.
