In a unique event, fiber artist Lindsay Obermeyer will direct a knitting performance at the University of Memphis that will become an art exhibit and community project.

Knitters and fiber artists from throughout the Memphis area will gather Saturday, Oct. 8, at 10 a.m. in front of the U of M's McWherter Library for a group photo and video wearing hand-knit hats they produced. Their hats then will be assembled into one interconnected unit and displayed as part of “Red Thread: Visible and Invisible” at the University's Art Museum Oct. 22-Nov. 23.

After the exhibit ends its run, the hats will be disconnected and donated to MIFA's Caps of Love program in time for distribution at Thanksgiving.

Obermeyer has exhibited her works at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Milwaukee Art Museum, and the Museum of Arts and Design. She holds BFA and MAT degrees, as well as an MFA degree in fiber arts.

The museum is located in the Communications and Fine Arts Building, Room 142. Regular hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Admission is free.
