The University of Memphis held a press conference at 10:30 a.m. today. The following statement was made by President Shirley Raines:
Although this has been a tragic and trying week for the University of Memphis and the entire community, we are pleased that these arrests have been made swiftly. As we all know, the criminal justice system must still weigh in on the final judgment of this matter, but these arrests do confirm the original belief that this was a targeted attack, and not a random act of violence. It is troubling that it appears one of our students was involved. We do want to thank those of our students and members of the community who came forward to help with this investigation. The University will continue to work with the Memphis Police Department as this matter continues. We want to reassure our students, their parents, our faculty and staff, and our alumni family that safety and security remain our number one priority. The investigation has brought these arrests. As you know, we will have a memorial service tomorrow night in honor of Taylor Bradford. Following that, I urge all of us to continue on with our lives, as Taylor’s family has requested that we do. We will let the criminal justice system do its work now.
