Season Opens with Zany June Moon
For
release: September 29, 2003
Theatre
patrons are in for a swinging good time as June Moon
hits the U of M Mainstage October 9-11 and 15-18. Packed with
zany one liners, sassy wisecracks, light romance and slight
dramatic tension, June Moon is a delightful screwball
romantic comedy set in the 1920s. The play centers around
small-town boy Fred Stevens and his experiences as an aspiring
Tin Pan Alley lyricist.
In
a chance meeting on a train, small town boy Stevens sets his
sights on Edna Baker, a salubrious saucer-eyed
girl next door. Then his partner's sister-in-law Eileen, a
swindling siren, pops into the picture. We've all heard the
story before, but that does not dismiss the fact that Ring
Lardner and George S. Kaufman wrote an irresistibly charming
little
piece of theatre.
Director Pamela Poletti, a third-year candidate for the Master
of Fine Arts in Theatre Directing at the University of Memphis,
is a native Memphian with a long history in Memphis theatre
beginning in 1982 when she appeared
opposite legendary actor Jim Ostrander as Anne Boleyn in Anne
of a Thousand Days at Theatre Memphis. She has since directed
plays at Germantown Community Theatre and Theatre Memphis,
appeared in numerous productions in Memphis, and currently
serves as a member of Theatre Memphis' Playfinding Committee.
The October 2003 opening of June Moon marks her directing
debut at the University of Memphis.
Each performance will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 for
adults and $10 for students and senior citizens. All University
of Memphis students will receive one free ticket with a valid
