For press information, contact Gabrielle Maxey

The "Coming Home!" exhibition at the Art Museum of the University of Memphis is the inspiration for a symposium Sept. 18 at 2 p.m. in the Fogelman Executive Center, Room 123. Scholars in the fields of folk art, communication, and Southern culture will share their observations during an informal slide presentation and discussion. The program is free and open to the public.

Panelists will include Ramona Austin, a scholar in African-American art and culture and former director of the Hampton University Museum; Carol Crown, associate professor of art at the U of M and curator of the "Coming Home!" exhibit; Hal Fulmer, a faculty member at Troy State University and essayist for the "Coming Home!" catalog; Kymbely Pinder, an art historian and writer who will discuss the relationship between African-American art and religion; and Cheryl Rivers, an independent scholar in the field of American folk art.

"Coming Home! Self-Taught Artists, the Bible and the American South" is on display at the U of M Art Museum through Nov. 13. It includes 125 works of art that explore Biblical themes and imagery. For more information on the symposium or the exhibition, call 901-678-2224.
