to Hold Symposium on Themes Related to "Coming Home!"

The
"Coming Home!" exhibition at the Art Museum of the
University of Memphis is the inspiration for a symposium Sept.
18 at 2 p.m. in the Fogelman Executive Center, Room 123. Scholars
in the fields of folk art, communication, and Southern culture
will share their observations during an informal slide presentation
and discussion. The program is free and open to the public.
Panelists
will include Ramona Austin, a scholar in African-American
art and culture and former director of the Hampton University
Museum; Carol Crown, associate professor of art at the U of
M and curator of the "Coming Home!" exhibit; Hal
Fulmer, a faculty member at Troy State University and essayist
for the "Coming Home!" catalog; Kymbely Pinder,
an art historian and writer who will discuss the relationship
between African-American art and religion; and Cheryl Rivers,
an independent scholar in the field of American folk art.
"Coming
Home! Self-Taught Artists, the Bible and the American South"
is on display at the U of M Art Museum through Nov. 13. It
includes 125 works of art that explore Biblical themes and
