U of M Business Professors Earn Palmer Awards

The
University of Memphis has named five faculty members as this
year's Suzanne Downs Palmer Professors. The cash awards honor
outstanding achievement in research, teaching, scholarship,
service, community outreach, and fundraising. They are awarded
to tenured and tenure-track faculty in the Fogelman College
of Business and Economics.
Recipients
in the research category were Jerry Turner, associate professor
of accounting, and Robert Wiggins, assistant professor of
management. In the teaching category, the award went to K.K.
Fung, professor of economics. Recognized in the service category
were Brian Janz, associate professor of management information
systems, and John Malloy, professor of accounting.
Before
joining the U of M, Turner taught at Florida International
University, the University of Colorado at Denver, and Texas
A&M University, where he earned his Ph.D. Turner has worked
in public accounting and in industry.
Wiggins
earned his MBA and doctorate from the University of Texas.
He has published articles in leading journals, including the
Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science,
and Management Science. His research areas include
sustained competitive advantage, hypercompetition, and information
systems strategy.
Fung
earned a doctorate from Harvard University. He received a
Fogelman College Teaching Excellence Fellowship in 2000. He
is the managing editor of opus1.org, an online journal for
undergraduate economic research, and the developer of Ulogistics.org,
an intuitive course manger that requires almost no user training.
Janz
is associate director of the FedEx Center for Supply Chain
Management in the FedEx Institute of Technology. He has more
than 20 years of experience in information systems, working
for the University of Minnesota, IBM, Honeywell, and General
Motors.
Malloy
is a certified public accountant and holds Ph.D. and juris
doctor degrees. He was the lead tax instructor for 11 years
at the accounting firm of KPMG Main Hurdman. Malloy also served
as director of the Tennessee Small Business Development Center.
The
professorships were established by a $400,000 gift to the
Fogelman College by U of M alumnus Dan Palmer, in appreciation
for his U of M education and in memory of his wife of 38 years
who died in 1999.
