The University of Memphis has named five faculty members as this year's Suzanne Downs Palmer Professors. The cash awards honor outstanding achievement in research, teaching, scholarship, service, community outreach, and fundraising. They are awarded to tenured and tenure-track faculty in the Fogelman College of Business and Economics.

Recipients in the research category were Jerry Turner, associate professor of accounting, and Robert Wiggins, assistant professor of management. In the teaching category, the award went to K.K. Fung, professor of economics. Recognized in the service category were Brian Janz, associate professor of management information systems, and John Malloy, professor of accounting.

Before joining the U of M, Turner taught at Florida International University, the University of Colorado at Denver, and Texas A&M University, where he earned his Ph.D. Turner has worked in public accounting and in industry.

Wiggins earned his MBA and doctorate from the University of Texas. He has published articles in leading journals, including the Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, and Management Science. His research areas include sustained competitive advantage, hypercompetition, and information systems strategy.

Fung earned a doctorate from Harvard University. He received a Fogelman College Teaching Excellence Fellowship in 2000. He is the managing editor of opus1.org, an online journal for undergraduate economic research, and the developer of Ulogistics.org, an intuitive course manger that requires almost no user training.

Janz is associate director of the FedEx Center for Supply Chain Management in the FedEx Institute of Technology. He has more than 20 years of experience in information systems, working for the University of Minnesota, IBM, Honeywell, and General Motors.

Malloy is a certified public accountant and holds Ph.D. and juris doctor degrees. He was the lead tax instructor for 11 years at the accounting firm of KPMG Main Hurdman. Malloy also served as director of the Tennessee Small Business Development Center.

The professorships were established by a $400,000 gift to the Fogelman College by U of M alumnus Dan Palmer, in appreciation for his U of M education and in memory of his wife of 38 years who died in 1999.
