More than 100 area business, education, and government leaders met this week at the University of Memphis’ FedEx Institute of Technology to learn how to protect modern cyber networks.  Patrick Gray, keynote speaker and Cisco System’s senior security strategist for the United States and Canada, discussed the wealth of knowledge he gained from 20 years spent with the FBI and additional experience at the Internet Threat Intelligence Center.

Gray’s visit is part of the public education and training initiatives of the University’s Center for Information Assurance, a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education recently designated by the Department of Homeland Security and the National Security Agency.

Larry Payne, Cisco’s director of vertical markets for state and local government and education, was also on hand and joined University of Memphis President Shirley Raines in celebrating Cisco’s partnership with the University that helped make the Center possible.

“Cisco Systems has provided equipment and support services to the FedEx Institute and the Center for Information Assurance,” Raines said, “as well as access to its technical and topical experts for public education and professional training programs critical to our community outreach efforts.  The University and Cisco are currently collaborating to provide additional professional training programs at the Center, and the University looks forward to an ongoing and growing partnership with them in this endeavor.”

Directed by Dr. Dipankar Dasgupta of the U of M’s computer science faculty, the University’s Center for Information Assurance is an interdisciplinary research and education center housed at the FedEx Institute of Technology.  The Center manages an online adaptive cyber-security training program for professionals, a graduate certificate in information assurance program for University students, and a U.S. Department of Defense scholarship in information assurance program.  It also conducts a variety of cyber-security-related public education programs, such as today’s event, and engages in a robust program of research, with a particular focus on immunity-based computer agents that can detect both known and unknown intrusions within a system and take appropriate action.
