What’s it all about?
New Student Orientation is a college experience guaranteed to help you get off to
a good start at the U of M. At Orientation you will:
- Meet other students, faculty, and staff
- Stay overnight in a residence hall
- Meet with an advisor
- Plan your class schedule
- Register for classes
- Discover activities and services
- Have your student ID made
- Tour the campus
- Have fun!
Am I required to attend Orientation?
Yes! Orientation is a mandatory program for first-time freshmen that will provide
you with everything you need to know about being a student at the U of M. You will
not be able to register for classes without attending New Student Orientation.
Does it matter which session I attend?
Orientation sessions are available on a first come, first served basis. You are welcome
to attend any Orientation session that fits with your schedule with the exception
of students majoring in nursing and music. It is strongly recommended that students
who are majoring in music and music industry choose from the recommended session(s).

What should I bring to Orientation?
- Comfortable summer clothes, walking shoes/tennis shoes
- Bathing suit and beach towel
- Workout clothes (optional)
- Driver’s license or state-issued photo identification
- Alarm clock
- Linens are provided, but you may want to bring an extra blanket or pillow
- Umbrella
- Light jacket
Am I required to stay on campus for Orientation?
Of course! Staying on campus for Orientation is an important part of a two-day session
experience. Even if you will not be living in the residence halls, staying on campus
will give you the chance to meet other freshmen who are sharing the same experience.
Even if you live in Memphis, it is a requirement that you stay overnight at Orientation.
How do I register for classes?
At orientation, you will meet with an advisor to learn more about majors and plan
a schedule of courses for your first semester. After being advised, you will register
for the courses you and your advisor have selected. You will have a copy of your class
schedule when you leave Orientation.
Will I have my student ID made at Orientation?
Yes! Photo ID cards will be made during course registration. You must bring your driver’s
license or other photo identification to receive a student ID.
Do I have to attend the entire program?
You must attend all of the scheduled activities. Make plans to participate in the
entire session and arrange your work schedule and travel plans accordingly.
Should my parents come with me?
Definitely! We will have a special program for your parents while you are busy with
Orientation. Please encourage them to attend. We are ready to address all of their
questions and concerns.
